A High School Program For Early Entrance To University

What is the AAP ?

The AAP is a program designed for students who are serious about their education and want an opportunity to get a step up on the competition for placement in post-secondary institutions.

Student focus on the academic courses required to graduate from High School. After only 2.5 years they can begin their post-secondary experience in January of what would be their Grade 12 year.

How does the AAP work?

The AAP runs on a Quarter System. This means students focus on 2 courses for 10 weeks, one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

Teachers are available to guide and work with students through course material either in person or online using some of the latest technologies like “Elluminate”, our virtual classroom or “Video Conferencing”,

currently used by Battle River Online.

Exams, including diplomas, are written in November, January, April and June.

The last quarter runs only 6 weeks for grade 12 students but contains no diploma courses. This allows for post- secondary attendance in January of that year.

Who Attends the AAP?

The AAP is a strictly academic program. Only students with strong work habits should attempt the rigors of this program. These students are serious about their learning and are university bound.

However, a High School Diploma requires students to complete a number of non-academic courses as well. Students will also have opportunities to learn a second language or pursue a specially designed PE program suited to lifelong activities.

We also expect this program to develop a close knit community of learners. Working within small groups of like minded individuals and interacting freely with teachers will likely aide in the forming of lifelong friendships and relationships.

How Can You Attend Post-Secondary?

Battle River Online has been in consultation with the University of Alberta / Augustana Campus regarding January enrolments for post secondary study. The campus officials were excited to hear about this new program offered by Battle River Online.

Augustana is one of the few faculties of the U of A that accept second semester students. If the student meets the requirements for acceptance to Augustana, then starting in January is possible.

Small School Opportunities

Being part of a small school can offer students opportunities to take part in school life away from academic study.

Participation in individual sports competition is both available and encouraged. Battle River Online has had students compete in Cross-country, Golf, Badminton and Track and Field.

Graduation exercises for AAP students occur in December prior to heading off to University. Since our numbers are small the students have direct input into how they wish to share this special accomplishment with family.

Special Opportunity

The AAP is really a special opportunity for students that have the ability and desire to accelerate their learning.

The program delivery methods provide a balance of teacher supervision and guidance with some individual freedom for the pace of completion.

There is a “post-secondary” feel to the learning environment that prepares students for the university experience.

The AAP is another step towards individualizing education to suit the needs of students.
