The Battle River Hockey Academy is a partnership between Charlie Killam School and Augustana Athletics / Augustana Viking Hockey Team where student-athletes can focus on both academic achievement and individual skill development.
Hockey Staff
Brent Sawchuk will be the lead instructor with assistance from members of the Augustana Vikings Hockey Team . This will ensure that the students are applying a uniform standard of excellence through all aspects of school life.
Eligibility
Designed for students, male or female, in grades 7- 9, who are registered at Charlie Killam School. We are looking for someone who is disciplined, committed and dedicated to academics as well as his/her hockey.
Students will be selected on a variety of criteria. Commitment to academics, dedication to hockey, and potential for growth are all areas to be considered. The evaluation of the completed application form and information from the given references will be used to determine the acceptance into the program. A personal interview may be required.
Ideally students are expected to maintain a minimum academic average of 65% in each of the 4 core subjects. Students entering the program with an academic average below 65% are put on Academic Alert and will be monitored closely. Any student with a course average that drops significantly will be referred to the Academic Committee and placed on a 1-week probation notice. The Academic Committee will review each case on its own merits and on a case-by-case basis. The Committee may invoke a Suspension from on ice sessions until marks return to an acceptable level. A student may be dropped from the program should they fail to maintain an academic average that meets or exceeds the minimum expectations.
Please remember these are student-athletes and academics are our first priority.
Students are expected to maintain the completion rates of each course as specified by the instructor. Procedures for monitoring course completion are the same as for academic requirements.
General Behaviour
Respect for others, a strong work ethic, coachability, cooperativeness, and accountability are all attributes the Hockey Academy expect from its participants. Students of the Academy are expected to conduct themselves appropriately on and off the ice. A student may be removed from the program due to behaviour problems whether these problems occur at school or at the rink.
