ROLE DESCRIPTION FOR TEACHER ASSISTANTS |
Background
There is a need to clarify the duties and responsibilities of the teacher assistant and the teacher, so that a productive, synergistic environment will evolve for the benefit of students.
Procedures
1. A certified teacher will supervise all teacher assistants.
2. Teacher assistants will be assigned some or all of the following responsibilities under the direction of a teacher and/or principal:
2.1 Provide general supervision of students.
2.2 Assist in the actual delivery of instruction where the teacher has planned the activities.
2.3 Implement appropriate aspects of individual program plans that have been developed by the teacher(s) of the special needs student.
2.4 Provide in-class assistance to students who are doing “independent” work.
2.5 Monitor and supervise student behavior.
2.6 Assist with mobility or health issues or physical disabilities of special needs students.
2.7 Provide clerical and technical assistance, and supervise the distribution of educational materials.
2.8 Create materials for use in the classroom.
3. The following duties are deemed to be professional duties and must be carried out by a certificated teacher who is employed in that capacity.
3.1 Diagnose educational needs.
3.2 Prescribe and plan the educational program, including the development of unit and daily plans, and individual program plans.
3.3 Implement and supervise the instructional program.
3.4 Provide the “initial” teaching of a concept or skill.
3.5 Evaluate student performance and progress.
3.6 Report to parents.
