Advisor groups are to be used as mini-PACEs. Their intention is to
track students and follow up on their progress in school. Each P.A.G. is comprised of a
teacher, teachers aid and a group of students. The advisor team, teacher and
Teacher's Assistant (T.A.), track
the students' attendance, follow up on goal setting, and monitor behavior. If students
need help in other areas in their life, for example: socially, emotionally, or with their
home life, a referral is done and the student works one-on-one with a caseworker
or agency appropriate to the need to help
them find a solution.
Every week the students are coded as red, yellow, or green. These codes
correspond to their success the week before. If the student has fulfilled their
goal-setting requirements, have upheld their part of their attendance agreement, and have
maintained a positive attitude at school, then they are coded green. A yellow code would
mean that the student has made some effort toward their expectations, but did not meet all
the requirements. Not achieving weekly goals, poor attendance, or a negative attitude
would result in a red coding. Students who receive a red code will lose school privileges
until they get caught up. There are many incentives to being coded green, and these are at
the discretion of the advisor team. Some examples include: movie passes, pizza party,
field trip privileges, and "treats".
The caseworker's role is an essential one. If a student is coded red they
may be experiencing difficulties in their life that do not concern school and academics.
Our goal at P.A.C.E. is to have the students succeed in their education, but also as
individuals in the community. The caseworkers have support from a number of agencies in
Camrose, and are able to set students up with the support they need to help them sort
through priorities in their life. When a student is troubled with something outside of
school they aren't going to succeed academically. If we can help the students make
education a priority, they will be able to fulfill the goals of their future.
P.A.G.s help to build student-staff relations, and help to make school a
place where students want to be. The incentives give the students another reason to get
their work done and behave respectfully. It also allows the staff to get to know the
students on a different level. Sometimes the students find a confidant and friend.
