Battle River School Division believes that in a bilingual and multi-cultural society, it is important for students to have access to courses that will help them acquire and maintain proficiency in a second language. The goals of French Immersion in the Division are for students to:
• Achieve curricular learner outcomes;
• Achieve competence in English equivalency;
• Become “functionally fluent” in French by the end of Grade 12;
• Participate easily and willingly in French conversations;
• Communicate for professional and personal needs;
• Pursue post-secondary education in French and/or accept employment in French;
• Understand and appreciate francophone cultures.
The program is designed for students whose family heritage is other than French and was developed using the basic principles and strategies of language acquisition.
The French Immersion Program was first implemented by providing Early French Immersion programming at the Kindergarten and Grade One levels in 2004-2005 and has been phased in at subsequent grade levels with each successive year. The first class of graduates will graduate in the 2015-2016 school year.
The French immersion program is offered in “dual track” settings (schools also offer a full program taught in the English language) and is currently located in three schools within the City of Camrose.
