BRSD Board votes to increase flexibility of attendance boundaries for Camrose elementary schools

Posted on:

For the past several years, attendance boundaries for three elementary schools in Camrose have been closed.

Several years ago, the boundaries for Chester Ronning School, Jack Stuart School and the English program at Ecole Sifton School were closed in order to address issues of overcrowding, while Sparling School maintained a more open boundary in order to ensure parents had options for schooling. But, thanks in part to the adjustment of grade levels in the elementary schools in the fall of 2014 and the creation of a Grade 6 to 8 middle school at that time, the elementary school numbers have become more balanced and closed boundaries are no longer required.

BRSD will continue to ensure that all four Camrose elementary schools offer consistent programming for students. In addition, the school division wants to stress that decisions about a special placement outside the resident attendance area will be based on ensuring the educational / social / emotional / and physical wellbeing of a student. Under no circumstances should the elementary schools be considered to be “competing” for students.

The school division has developed guidelines and expectations for Camrose parents to follow when they are requesting their child be placed at an elementary school outside their resident attendance area.

Students must be registered in their designated school prior to requesting a special placement. The parent will be asked to meet with the Principal of the resident school to discuss the needs of the student and how they can best be met. Special placements will be approved for a maximum of one school year at a time, but can be revisited every year that the student is in elementary school. Transportation to a special placement school will be the responsibility of parents.

The intent is that parents will continue to send their children to their designated elementary school but also have the option and flexibility for requesting a special placement if it is in the best interests of their child.

This change will take place for the 2019-2020 school year. Elementary school principals can answer questions parents may have.
