Media Release: BRSD Student Receives 2025 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Award

Battle River School Division (BRSD) is pleased to share that Shane Makinaw, École Camrose Composite High School (ÉCCHS) student, has received Honourable Mention in the 2025 Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards, one of many honourable awards presented by Alberta School Boards Association (ASBA).
This recognition highlights Makinaw’s leadership, resilience, and commitment to his cultural identity and community. This outstanding demonstration of character, as well as his strong voice for Indigenous values and perspectives, provides advocacy in the classroom and beyond.
ÉCCHS Principal Shane Gau is proud of Makinaw’s leadership and admirable reputation at school.
“Shane is a remarkable young leader whose actions reflect strength, compassion and dedication,” said Gau. “We are proud to see him being acknowledged for the positive influence he has within our school and community.”
BRSD Board of Trustees Chair Patrick McFeely is also impressed by Makinaw’s character and representation of culture.
“Shane presented at one of our Board meetings, and we were all deeply impressed by his thoughtful words and presence,” said McFeely. “He is a well-spoken young man whose passion for sharing his culture and experiences is both moving and inspiring. Shane’s voice represents the strength and pride of his heritage, and we are honoured to celebrate his achievements.”
The ASBA Honouring Spirit: Indigenous Student Awards celebrate Indigenous students who embody courage, respect, and a commitment to learning and community involvement. Honourable Mentions are awarded to students who have made a meaningful impact and whose stories are deserving of recognition and celebration.
