Numeracy

What is Numeracy?

Numeracy is a fundamental area of skill for all students.  It is critical to success in school and far beyond.

Being numerate means having the confidence and skill to use numbers and mathematical approaches in all aspects of life.

A numerate individual  is able to reason with numbers and other mathematical concepts and apply these in a range of contexts and to solve a variety of problems.

Being numerate is as much about thinking and reasoning logically as about doing math calculations.

Why is Numeracy Important?

Numeracy is used in every aspect of our daily lives: at home, at work and beyond. We rely on our numeracy skills to compare costs, judge distances, decorate a room, interpret a chart or adapt a recipe. The digital age presents us with more numerical data than ever before, placing a new premium on numeracy skills.

Ways to Support Numeracy Development

Children’s motivation and achievement improve when their parents or caregivers are involved in their education. There are many everyday things you can do to encourage numeracy learning.

  • Be positive about math. Don't say things like "I can’t do math" or "I hated maths at school"; your child might start to think like that themselves.
  • Point out the math in everyday life. Include your child in activities involving math such as using money, cooking and travelling.
  • Praise your child for effort rather than talent. This shows them that by working hard they can always improve.
